Dental implants have revolutionized the replacement of teeth
What Are Dental Implants?
Fabricated from medical-grade titanium, dental implants are small threaded posts that are placed into the jawbone. While restorations – such as crowns, bridges, or dentures – replace the visible portion of the teeth, implants restore the roots. Because implants mimic the movements of natural teeth roots, they help preserve jawbone density and prevent bone loss over time. At our Austin, TX practice. Dr. Helen Ragsdale offers dental implants to patients who are seeking a long-lasting and reliable teeth replacement option.
The Versatility of Dental Implants
Dental implants can be used in a wide range of restorative treatments. In fact, they can be used to support:
Dental crowns
Patients missing only one tooth can replace it with one dental implant and have it restored with a single dental crown. This process does not require the removal of natural enamel, leaving all healthy tooth structure intact.
Dental bridges
Implants can also be used to support bridges, which can fill in spaces left behind by rows of missing teeth. Unlike traditional bridges, their implant-based counterparts do not necessitate enamel removal. Therefore, long-term oral health is better preserved.
Dentures
In the past, patients who were missing all of their teeth only had one option: traditional dentures. Unfortunately, these prostheses can slip or move out of place when eating or speaking. Today, implants can provide stability for removable dentures or fixed full-arch restorations so patients can live in full confidence.
The Dental Implant Treatment Process
Because dental implants have so many uses, treatment timelines can vary significantly depending on the unique needs of each patient. However, the process follows a basic guideline:
Initial consultation
To determine your eligibility for dental implants, Dr. Ragsdale will see you for an initial consultation. During this visit, she will examine your teeth, gums, jaw joints, and all other orofacial structures, making sure you are free from tooth decay and periodontal disease. In addition, scans and x-rays will be taken so that the underlying structures can be assessed. She will also discuss your health history with you in detail to ensure there are no medical complications that could hinder treatment.
Once all initial information has been gathered, the treatment planning process can begin. Using the images captured from your x-rays and scans, Dr. Ragsdale can determine the most optimal locations for your new implants. She will also be able to tell you if any preparatory procedures will be necessary.
Preparatory prodedures
In order for an implant to be successful long-term, it must be embedded in healthy, strong bone. Patients who have lost a substantial amount of bone density may require preparatory procedures before implants can be placed. This typically includes regenerative treatments, such as bone grafts or sinus lifts. Not every patient will require preparatory procedures, however. Dr. Ragsdale can let you know if this is necessary during your consultation.
Dental implant placement
In many cases, Dr. Ragsdale will refer patients out to a trusted oral surgeon or periodontist for implant placement. These specialists are experienced in dental implantology and can provide the highest level of care available. We are well-acquainted with several dental professionals in the Austin area, and can choose a provider who can best cater to your unique needs.
The implant placement procedure can typically be completed in about one hour. While the treatment can be performed under local anesthesia, some patients choose sedation for maximum comfort. After making a small incision in the gums, the doctor prepares the bone for the implants and strategically places them within the jaw. The incision is then closed with stitches.
Healing and recovery
Once the dental implants are placed, they typically require a few months of healing before the final restorations can be connected. During the healing phase, osseointegration occurs – a process in which the natural bone tissue fuses to the implants for stability. This recovery phase can vary for every individual. However, on average, it takes about three to six months.
Placement of final restoration
Once osseointegration has occurred, the final restoration can be attached. During a visit at our practice, Dr. Ragsdale will place the crown, bridge, or denture and secure it with either dental cement or screw-retention.
Results and Outcome of Dental Implant Placement
Dental implants are incredibly durable. In fact, with proper upkeep, they can last a lifetime. Caring for dental implants requires no more than routine oral health and maintenance. Therefore, in order to preserve your investment, you should attend all recommended dental cleanings and examinations and develop an at-home hygiene regimen to keep your implants looking and feeling great for years to come.
