Periodontitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the gum tissue. The condition can damage both the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. Periodontitis is more prevalent in men than in women (56 percent versus 38 percent). Poverty and education is another known risk factor. Severe periodontitis is most prevalent among adults over 65 and smokers, the report found.
