How do you tell a good dentist from a bad one?

sign that says "always smile"

Whether you’re new to the area, a long-time practitioner has retired, or you are unhappy with your current provider, finding a new dentist can be stressful. And while the internet is a great resource, the sheer number of dentists that show up can leave you feeling even more overwhelmed. How do you know who to pick? How do you tell a good dentist from a bad one?

From experience to online reviews, technology, to your own gut feeling, there are many signs to let you know what kind of dentist you are dealing with. At Austin Laser Dentist, we are confident that you will know you are dealing with the right kind of dentist from the moment you step through the door. Our relaxing environment is a great introduction to Dr. Helen Ragsdale, her advanced technology, and her clinical expertise.

Still wondering how you tell a good dentist from a bad one? Contact us and see if our office is a good fit for you.

Experience

You want a dentist with great training and plenty of hands-on expertise. Dr. Ragsdale graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1985. In her nearly four decades of professional dentistry, she has pursued ongoing education in numerous subjects, including sedation, laser dentistry, oral surgery, and dental implants.

Technology

Find a practitioner who uses the latest dental tools. At Austin Laser Dentist, our technology is not a marketing gimmick. Rather, we seamlessly integrate it into nearly every aspect of our practice, from laser cavity detection to root canal therapy.

Recommendations, Reviews, and Referrals

Asking friends for recommendations is always a great idea. And be sure to check the online reviews. Avoid dentists that no one seems to have heard of, offices with little online presence, and doctors with poor ratings.

Dr. Ragsdale is proud to have garnered a loyal following and a plethora of five-star reviews.

Chairside Manner and Ability to Listen

Your dentist should make you feel comfortable in the office. Find someone with whom you feel at home, who takes time to answer your questions, and who doesn’t dismiss your concerns. If your gut feeling tells you a particular dentist is not a good fit, listen to it!

Laid Back vs. High Pressure

If there’s one place you should be safe from a high-pressure sales pitch, it’s in your dentist’s office. If your dentist is constantly pushing you to undergo additional treatment or trying to convince you that you “need” cosmetic care, that office is not the place for you!

Affordability

Though you should never be pressured into treatment, when you do need or want it, it should be reasonably priced. At some dental offices, the only options are dental insurance or full out-of-pocket payment. This is a huge problem when 18% of Texans are without health insurance

That is why we offer an in-house dental plan, which includes preventive care and significant discounts on most other treatments.
