In-house Dental Plan vs. Conventional Dental Insurance

Piggy bank with hundred dollar bills

The CDC estimates that less than half of adults in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana have not had dental insurance coverage in the past year. Even though many Americans live without dental insurance, routine dental care can help prevent oral diseases and other conditions. To increase access and affordability in dentistry, Austin Laser Dentist offers in-house dental plans to those who need them. In this patient-oriented blog, we compare our in-house dental plans to conventional dental insurances so that people can make a sound decision while financing their individualized dental care demands.

What’s Covered

At Austin Laser Dentist, you decide. While all our plans cover 100% preventative, free teeth whitening, and unlimited diagnostic services and exams, you determine which services you would like covered. Also, our basic, premium, and custom plans come without annual maximums or waiting periods.

Conventional insurance usually covers essential preventative services, and most max out between $1,000 and $2,000 for covered services. Because of this annual maximum, patients may not afford to get the restorative dental work they need or cosmetic dentistry. In addition to your monthly premium, you could still end up paying a lot of money out-of-pocket with insurance.

Premiums, Deductibles, and Other Associated Fees

Did you know that our in-house dental plans come with no deductible and copays? Instead, we only ask that you pay a start-up and annual fees. We like to keep it simple and often give better deals than some insurance providers.

Conversely, conventional insurance plans often come with many expenditures, including:

  • -An insurance premium: the total sum of money an individual pays for an insurance policy
  • -A deductible: the amount you must pay for health care services before insurance kicks in
  • -A copay: a fixed, out-of-pocket expense that you must pay for after the deductible for healthcare services

Location, Location, Location

While it’s true that in-house dental plans limit patients to one location, this is not necessarily a bad thing. When dental offices offer a wide range of services, getting multiple services in one place is a streamlined process. Also, it can be easier for an individual to build trust and maintain relationships with the dentist and dental team when he or she decides to go with one location that provides comprehensive dentistry. Some services we provide at our Austin location include:

  • -Gentle laser dentistry for cavity treatment, periodontal care, and more
  • -Cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics
  • -Restorative dentistry
  • -Oral surgery
  • -TMJ relief and bruxism treatment
  • -Sedation dentistry

On the other hand, conventional dental insurance limits patients to in-network dentists, which can be inconvenient (especially if you have a lot of work that you want to accomplish this year). Transferring information, finding new locations that can provide precisely what you need that are also in-network, and learning the unique personalities of the dental team can sound like a hassle to some.
