Laser Teeth Whitening Explained

A bright white smile can greatly improve your confidence and leave a lasting impression on those around you. Unfortunately, dull and yellow teeth can also leave a lasting impression, just not the one you want. Laser teeth whitening can help you achieve the beautiful, bright smile that you desire in one quick visit to the dentist.

Our Austin, TX dentist, Dr. Helen Ragsdale, is passionate about helping her patients gain confidence in their teeth by offering several cosmetic dentistry treatments, including laser teeth whitening. Continue reading to learn more about this process.

Laser Teeth Whitening Treatment Steps

The laser whitening process takes about 60 minutes to complete. Here are the steps we take during the laser teeth whitening procedure: We place a plastic or rubber guard in your mouth to keep it open, pull your lips away from your teeth, and give us access to all of your teeth.

1.We apply a protective layer of gel over your gums that hardens to a rubber-like consistency.

2. Our dentist will carefully and strategically apply a whitening gel to your teeth.

3. (Here’s where the laser comes in!) Dr. Ragsdale will use the LaserSmile® T Diode Laser to activate the gel. This part takes about 40 minutes.

4. Once your desired shade is achieved, we will remove the whitening gel, the protective gels from your gums, and the rubber guard.

At our office, your treatment includes top and bottom bleaching trays and one syringe for at-home use. We’ll teach you exactly when and how to use them for touch-ups.

Benefits of Lasers for Whitening Teeth

So, are lasers safer? More effective? Faster? Yes, yes, and yes! Here are the benefits of laser whitening treatment compared to other in-office and at-home whitening methods:

  • Fast and Impressive Results: Patients notice immediate results after just one laser teeth whitening appointment. In many cases, patients leave the office with teeth that are 9 shades lighter than when they walked in. Other teeth whitening options may only brighten teeth up to 5 shades in one appointment or over a period of weeks.
  • Easy: Unlike at-home whitening treatments, all the patient has to do is sit back and relax– we do all the work!
  • Safe: We use protective measures to ensure your lips and gums are safe during the treatment process. We are also trained dental professionals, so we know how to take care of your teeth and when to remove the gel so it doesn’t do damage to the enamel.
  • Low-Risk: Dental lasers also significantly reduce the risk of dental sensitivity after the appointment. However, with any whitening procedure, sensitivity is possible.
