What is composite bonding used for?

close up of perfect smile

Years ago, composite resin was exclusively used to fill cavities. Today, cosmetic dentists use this composite resin material in a procedure called composite bonding. Also called cosmetic bonding, this treatment can cover up all types of aesthetic dental problems, like misshapen teeth, chipped teeth, stains, gaps, and cracks. The best news? Cosmetic dental bonding is extremely affordable and non-invasive.

The Composite Bonding Procedure

Patients often choose cosmetic bonding because it is a quick and conservative procedure, meaning that the dentist doesn’t usually have to remove any of the patient’s enamel or use a local anesthetic.

To ensure the composite resin material sticks to the tooth’s surface, the dentist will treat the surface of the tooth with a conditioning formula that roughens up the tooth. Think of the conditioning formula as an exfoliant or primer for the tooth.

Next, the dentist will apply the composite resin to the tooth in layers and uses a special light to harden the material just enough to make it moldable. At that point, the dentist will use various sculpting tools to shape the resin.

Finally, she will polish the material so that it matches the shine of natural teeth, and the process is complete!

What to Expect After Cosmetic Bonding

Composite bonding can last up to 10 years when taken proper care of. Once your cosmetic bonding procedure is complete, we recommend these guidelines for keeping your cosmetic bonding beautiful and long-lasting:

  • Maintain a proper oral hygiene routine by brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing once a day before bed.
  • Use a minimally abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the surface of the composite bonding.
  • Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash so that the bonding material isn’t weakened.
  • Avoid foods and beverages that might stain and discolor the dental bonding. These include coffee, red wine, cranberry juice, soy sauce, tomato sauce, and blueberries.
  • Avoid smoking and/or chewing tobacco.
  • Schedule regular dental cleanings so your dentist can remove any plaque and tartar that could compromise your oral health.

Other Cosmetic Dental Solutions

Composite bonding is a great cosmetic dental treatment because of its affordability, but it isn’t the best solution for everyone. If you’re interested in other aesthetic dental options, consider dental veneers.

While veneers require more money and time, they are extremely realistic and durable. Dental veneers can last up to 20 years, or even longer when given the proper care. However, patients can still expect to maintain veneers almost the same way as composite bonding, but with less concern about breaking, chipping, and staining.
